Who needs a boat driver’s licence?

Anyone who is going to drive a recreational boat with a length over 8 metres or with an engine over 25 horsepower must have a boat driver’s licence. The requirement also applies to jet skis regardless of engine power. The certificate is required by law and is issued after passing the boat driving test.

Age requirements

You must be 16 years old to take the boat driving test. Children under the age of 16 can still drive a boat with an engine of up to 10 horsepower, as long as an adult with a boat driver’s license is on board.

Requirements and preparation

There is no compulsory course obligation for the boat driving test. You can read the syllabus on your own and register for the exam directly. Many still choose a course to gain a better understanding of navigation and the rules of the sea.

Where do you take the test?

The Boat driver’s test is organized by approved test centers across the country. You register via a test provider, and the test itself is carried out electronically. The test can be taken all year round, but most people take it in the spring before the boating season.
