Engine types

Recreational boats mainly use two engine types: outboard engine and inboard engine. Outboards are most common on smaller boats and are easy to maintain. Inboard engines are found in larger boats and provide better weight distribution.

Fuel

Petrol engines are most common on outboards, while larger inboard engines often use diesel. Important rules for fuel handling:

• Fill fuel with ventilation and avoid spillage
• Store spare fuel in approved cans
• Petrol is highly flammable - no smoke when filling
• Always check fuel hoses for leaks

Cooling system

Most boat engines are cooled with seawater which is sucked in through a bottom valve. Overheating is a common cause of engine failure and is often due to clogged water intake or a defective impeller. Always check that water comes out of the cooling water outlet when the engine is running.

Common engine problems

Basic maintenance

Good maintenance extends the life of the engine. Check oil level, fuel filter and spark plugs regularly. Always rinse the engine with fresh water after use in salt water to avoid corrosion. Before the start of the season, the engine should be given a full review.
