The rules of the sea
Learn the rules of the sea, duty to give way and navigation rules which are the syllabus for the boat driving test.
What are the sea water regulations?
The Maritime Rules are a set of guidelines drawn up by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate to promote safe and considerate traffic at sea. They are not laws in themselves, but complement the rules of the sea and form the basis for good seamanship.
The most important maritime rules
- Show consideration and use common sense
- Keep a reasonable speed and a good distance from others
- Know and follow the rules of the sea
- Always wear a lifejacket
- Avoid alcohol and other drugs at sea
Obligation to give way at sea
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Two motorboats meet | Both veer to starboard (right) |
| Crossing Courses | The boat that has the other on its starboard side gives way |
| Sailboat against motorboat | The motorboat gives way to the sailboat |
| Acquisition | The overtaking boat always gives way |
| Larger vessel | Small recreational boats give way to larger vessels in narrow waters |
The obligation to give way at sea is based on the principle that the most maneuverable boat gives way to the one that has limited ability to change course.
Speed limits
In inland waters local speed limits often apply, typically 5 knots in harbor areas and close to land. Outside marked zones there is no general speed limit, but you are always obliged to keep a safe speed adapted to the conditions.
Lantern guidance
All boats must carry lanterns between sunset and sunrise. Motorboats carry white top light, side lanterns (green starboard, red port) and white stern light. Sailboats under sail only carry side lanterns and stern lights.
