Automatic speed control and stretch ATK

Automatic traffic control (ATK) and stretching ATK are the Norwegian Road Administration’s tools for enforcing speed limits. On the theory test, you can get questions about how they work.

The difference between ATK and stretch ATK

Distance ATK calculates your average speed over a longer distance by recording the time between two cameras. It is therefore no use slowing down directly in front of the camera.

Where to find ATK

• European roads and national roads with a high accident risk. See speed on European roads and national roads .
• Tunnels with a lower speed limit than the road outside. Read about speed in tunnels .
• Sections with many curves or schools and kindergartens .
• ATK is always notified with a sign (sign 556). See signs and road markings .

Important to remember

• ATK does not replace your own assessment. You must always keep adjusted speed according to the conditions.
• For roadworks temporary ATK can be set up.
• The stretch ATK measures all vehicles, including those that change lanes.
• The speed limit always applies, not just where the camera is. Use the three-second rule to keep a good distance as well.
