Car insurance and liability

Liability Insurance is Mandatory

All registered vehicles in Norway must have liability insurance. This covers damage you cause to other people, vehicles, or property. Driving without valid insurance is illegal and can result in fines and confiscation of the vehicle.

Types of Insurance

Deductible and Bonus

In case of damage, you pay a deductible. Over time, you accumulate bonus points that reduce the premium. A damage-free period gives a higher bonus, while claims can reduce it.

Responsibility in an Accident

• You are responsible for damage caused with your vehicle
• In the case of driving under the influence, the insurance company can claim regression , meaning you must repay the payout
• Violation of the Road Traffic Act can affect insurance coverage
• Always document the accident site and report to the insurance company

Uninsured Vehicle

If you drive an uninsured vehicle, you can be held personally responsible for all damages. The Traffic Insurance Association (TFF) can claim compensation from you afterwards.

Check Your Insurance Regularly

• Make sure the insurance is valid before you drive
• Ensure the correct coverage level based on the car’s value and usage pattern
• Keep the car in good condition through regular vehicle inspections
