Toll fees and AutoPASS

Norway has an extensive network of toll stations that finance road construction and maintenance. As a driver, you need to know how the system works.

How toll stations work

Most toll stations in Norway are automatic and do not require you to stop. The vehicle is registered with an AutoPASS tag or by photographing the license plate.

AutoPASS agreement

• An AutoPASS tag is mounted in the windshield and gives discounts on toll crossings.
• The tag is linked to an agreement with a toll company.
• With a valid agreement, you usually get 20% discount on the regular rate.
• The tag works across all toll stations in Norway.

Rates and time rule

• The rate varies depending on vehicle type, weight, and fuel type.
• Electric cars have a reduced rate, but no longer pay zero everywhere.
• The time rule means you are only charged for one crossing if you pass several toll stations within the same toll ring within 60 minutes.
• Rush hour may have a higher rate in certain urban areas.

Toll rings in urban areas

Several Norwegian cities have toll rings with stations around the city center. The purpose is to reduce traffic and finance public transport and road projects. Examples include Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim.

Missing payment

• If you drive without a tag, an invoice is sent to the registered owner.
• Missing payment can lead to additional fees.
• Repeated omissions can result in debt collection.
