Use of turn signals

Turn signals are your most important communication with other road users. Proper use makes traffic predictable and safe, while incorrect use or lack of signals creates dangerous situations.

When to use turn signals

Timing for turn signals

• Built-up area: Give signal at least 30 m before turning
• Outside built-up area: Give signal at least 100 m before
• Turn on the signal before you brake, so the traffic behind understands why you are slowing down
• Turn off the signal as soon as the maneuver is completed

Turn signals in roundabouts

Special rules apply in a roundabout:

• Do not use left turn signal when entering
• Use right turn signal when you pass the last exit before yours
• Exception: If you are taking the first exit to the right, use the right turn signal already when entering

Common mistakes

• Signal too late: Others do not have time to adjust
• Forgetting to turn it off: Misleading signal that can cause accidents
• Signal without action: A signal means nothing unless you actually perform the maneuver
• Signal does not replace observation: You must always check mirrors and blind spots as well

Emergency situations

Use hazard lights (all four turn signals at the same time) when you:

• Stop in an unexpected or dangerous place
• Approach the end of a queue on the motorway
• Experience an emergency situation that requires warning others
