Tire types and tire requirements

The right tires are crucial for grip and traffic safety. On the theory test, you may get questions about tire types, legal requirements, and when to replace them.

Tire Types

In Northern Norway (Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark), studded tires are allowed from October 15.

Legal Requirements for Tread Depth

• Summer tires: minimum 1.6 mm
• Winter tires: minimum 3 mm

The tires should have even wear and be free from visible damage. Illegal tires can result in a fine and may lead to points on your driving license .

Air Pressure

Incorrect air pressure affects braking distance, fuel consumption, and tire wear. Check the air pressure at least once a month and always before longer trips. The correct pressure can be found in the car’s manual or on a label in the door frame.

Tires’ Importance for Stopping Distance

Worn tires dramatically increase braking distance, especially on wet roads. The combination of low tread depth and high speed increases the risk of hydroplaning . Good tread depth is particularly important when driving at high speeds under various weather conditions .

Chains

In particularly slippery conditions, chains may be mandatory. Warning signs and variable signs indicate chain requirements on certain stretches.
