The Relationship Between Consumption and Emissions
Each liter of gasoline burned emits approximately 2.3 kg of CO₂. For diesel, the number is around 2.7 kg of CO₂ per liter. The more fuel you use, the more greenhouse gases end up in the atmosphere. Driving style, the condition of the car, and external conditions all affect consumption.
Factors That Increase Fuel Consumption

Vehicle Weight and Engine Type
Heavier cars use more fuel. Electric cars have zero direct emissions, while hybrid cars combine electric and fossil operation. Regardless of engine type, the principle applies: smooth and anticipatory driving results in the lowest consumption.
Tips for Lower Consumption
- Shift early and keep engine revs low
- Use engine braking downhill and approaching intersections
- Avoid idling during longer stops
- Plan your route and avoid detours
- Make sure tires have the correct pressure and type
Speed and Consumption
The relationship between speed and consumption is not linear. At speeds over 80 km/h, air resistance increases sharply. Follow speed limit signs and adjust your speed according to conditions. Maintaining a steady speed on the highway is more efficient than alternating between accelerating and braking.
Also keep a safe distance so that you can use risk assessment and driving conditions and avoid unnecessary stops.
