Electronic stability control
This is how electronic stability control works and why it is important for traffic safety.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC/ESP) is one of the most important safety systems in modern cars. The system is mandatory in all new passenger cars sold in Norway and the EU.
How ESC Works
ESC monitors the car’s movements using sensors and compares them with the driver’s steering movements. When the car is about to skid or spin, the system intervenes by:
- Braking individual wheels separately
- Reducing engine power
- Restoring the car’s stability
All of this happens automatically and faster than a driver can react.
Understeer and Oversteer
| Situation | What happens | ESC action |
|---|---|---|
| Understeer | The car continues straight in the turn | Brakes the inner rear wheel |
| Oversteer | The rear end slips out | Brakes the outer front wheel |
ESC significantly reduces the risk of skidding and fishtailing.
Limitations
ESC cannot defy the laws of physics:
- The system does not help if the speed is too high in the turn
- On ice and snow, the effect is limited by the tires’ grip
- ESC does not replace careful driving and proper distance
ESC Warning Light
When ESC intervenes, a warning light flashes on the dashboard, usually a car symbol with a squiggly line. If the light stays on, it may indicate a fault in the system, and you should have it checked. Learn more about warning lights .
ESC and Other Systems
ESC is based on ABS (anti-lock brakes) and traction control (ASR). Together with other safety systems , they form a comprehensive safety network. ESC also interacts with brakes and braking systems for optimal brake distribution.
