EU inspection and periodic inspection
Overview of periodic vehicle inspection, when it should be done and what is checked.
EU Inspection (periodic vehicle inspection, PKK) is a legally required technical inspection of the vehicle. The purpose is to ensure that cars on Norwegian roads are in proper technical condition.
When the car should undergo EU inspection

| New car | First inspection after 4 years |
| 4–10 years | Every 2 years |
| Over 10 years | Every year |
The deadline is calculated from first registration. You can see the deadline in the vehicle registration certificate or on the Norwegian Public Roads Administration website.
What is checked
- Brakes – effect, wear, and brake fluid
- Tires – tread depth, damage, and correct type
- Lights – all types of lights and light height
- Steering and chassis – wear and play
- Bodywork and frame – rust and damage
- Exhaust system – emissions and tightness
- Safety equipment – seat belts and mirrors
Inspection result
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Approved | The car is in regulatory condition |
| Approved with remarks | Minor faults that should be corrected |
| Not approved | Faults that must be fixed, new inspection within deadline |
| Driving ban | Serious faults, the car cannot be driven |
Consequences of missing inspection
If you drive without a valid EU inspection, you risk fines and that insurance does not cover damages. The car may also be deregistered.
Preparation
Perform a thorough daily check and check oil levels and fluids before taking the car for inspection. This will help you avoid the most common reasons for failing.
