In residential zones and shared streets, cars share the road with children, cyclists, and pedestrians. The speed limit is low, and the requirement for attention is high.

Why low speed is critical

• Short stopping distance. At 30 km/h, the stopping distance is about 18 meters on dry roads, compared to 40 meters at 50 km/h. See calculation of stopping distance .
• Children are unpredictable. They can suddenly run out between parked cars.
• Shared area. In shared streets, pedestrians are allowed to use the entire roadway.

How to drive in the residential zone

• Reduce speed before entering the zone, not after the sign.
• Be especially attentive near parked cars that hide vulnerable road users .
• Keep extra distance from the car in front using the three-second rule .
• Be ready to stop at crosswalks and pedestrian crossings.

Speed reducers and physical measures

Many residential zones have speed bumps, narrowings, or raised crosswalks that force you to slow down. Drive slowly over these to avoid damage to the car and for passenger comfort.

At schools and kindergartens , there are often even stricter measures, especially during rush hours.
