Ferry rules and boarding

Ferries are an important part of Norwegian infrastructure. There are specific rules for how you behave as a driver at the ferry terminal and on board.

Queuing at the ferry terminal

• Follow the queue signs and any instructions from dock personnel.
• Vehicles carrying hazardous materials should stand in a separate lane and notify the crew.
• Cars with trailers are often directed to separate lanes.
• You should normally not leave the vehicle in the queuing area unless it is clearly signposted.

Boarding

• The engine must be turned off when you are parked on the car deck.
• Use the parking brake and leave the car in first gear or P (automatic).

Safety on board

• All passengers must leave the vehicle during the crossing and go up to the passenger decks.
• It is forbidden to stay on the car deck while the ferry is sailing.
• Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and rescue equipment on board.
• Smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas.

Disembarking

• Start the engine only when the crew gives a signal.
• Drive carefully off the ferry and be aware of pedestrians at the terminal.
• Remember that you have priority rules for traffic on the road you are entering.
