Lane change means that you switch from one driving lane to another in the same direction. It requires good observation and the right timing to avoid dangerous situations.

Right of way when changing lanes

The person changing lanes always has the right of way for traffic already in the lane you want to move into. You can never force your way in, even if a queue forms in your lane.

• Give a clear signal with your turn signal, but wait until there is space and it is safe
• Cancel the lane change if another driver accelerates and closes the gap
• Keep a three-second distance from the car in front after you have changed lanes

When a lane change is necessary

• Overtaking: You need to move to the left lane to pass on a multi-lane road
• Exiting: Position yourself in the correct lane well in advance of the exit
• Driving on a highway: Lane changes are part of the flow when entering and exiting
• Roundabout: Lane choices in roundabouts follow their own rules

Blind spot

The blind spot is the area not covered by the rearview mirror or side mirrors. It is located diagonally behind on both sides of the car. A quick glance over your shoulder is the only way to check it.

Common mistakes

• Forgetting the blind spot check is the most frequent cause of accidents during lane changes
• Too short turn signal timing gives other drivers too little time to react
• Slow lane changes create uncertainty; be decisive once you have made the decision
• Lane changing at intersections is prohibited and dangerous
