Right of way and priority road

What is a priority road?

A priority road is marked with sign 202 — the yellow diamond. If you are driving on a priority road, you have the right of way over traffic from side roads, regardless of the right-hand rule.

Signs and end of priority road

When the priority road ends, the right-hand rule applies again unless otherwise indicated by signs.

Right of way at intersections

• Traffic on side roads has yield signs or stop signs.
• You do not need to brake for the side road, but keep your eyes open — not everyone respects the sign.
• When making a left turn on a priority road, you still must yield to oncoming traffic.

Priority road that curves

Some priority roads curve through intersections. In that case, a sub-sign shows the direction of the priority road. Those following the priority road retain the right of way.
