Right of Way at Pedestrian Crossings

You always have the right of way for pedestrians who are about to enter or are already in a marked pedestrian crossing. It is not enough to just slow down — you must come to a complete stop.

Marked vs. Unmarked Crossings

At unmarked crossings, you do not have a formal right of way, but you are required to exercise caution according to the Road Traffic Act, section 3.

Near Schools and Residential Areas

• Expect children crossing unexpectedly near schools.
• The speed limit is often reduced to 30 km/h in school zones .
• Be especially alert in the morning and afternoon.

Pedestrian Signal

When the crossing has its own signal, pedestrians follow their light. But even with green for you, you may have to wait for pedestrians who are legally crossing on their green signal.

How to Avoid Mistakes

• Slow down well in advance when you see a pedestrian crossing.
• Stop in time so the pedestrian feels safe.
• Do not pass a vehicle that has stopped at a pedestrian crossing — there may be people you cannot see.
