Chains and winter equipment

In Norwegian winter conditions, chains and the right equipment can make the difference between getting there safely and getting stuck. The theory test tests whether you know the rules and know when the equipment is mandatory.

When are chains mandatory

Chains may become mandatory on certain stretches of road in difficult conditions. You will see this notification with:

• Danger sign for tire chain requirements
• Variable signs that are activated when needed
• Information from The Norwegian Public Roads Administration and the traffic control centre

Chain requirements most often apply to mountain passes and steep stretches.

Types of Chains

Installing chains

• Chains are mounted on the drive wheels
• Practice assembly before you need them
• Do not drive over 50 km/h with chains
• Remove the chains as soon as the road is bare to avoid damage to the tires and road

Other winter gear you should bring

• Ice scraper and snow brush for good visibility
• Tow sock or tow rope
• Warm clothes and flashlight
• Washer fluid with antifreeze
• Jumper cables

Tires in winter driving

Tire chains do not replace proper winter tires . You must have approved winter tires or studded tires during the winter season, and the tires come as an addition in extreme conditions. The correct tire pressure is also important with tire chains.

Spikes and spikes

Studded tires are allowed from November 1st to the first Monday after Easter Sunday (October 15th in Northern Norway). Studded tire fees may apply in some cities. Non-studded winter tyres with a good sipe tread pattern are an alternative that results in lower fuel consumption .
