Driving in a roundabout

Roundabouts regulate traffic flow at intersections and reduce serious accidents. You have yield to traffic already in the roundabout.

Basic Rules

Lane Choice in Roundabouts

• Right lane: Use this when you are taking the first or second exit (straight or right).
• Left lane: Use this when you are passing several exits or taking the last exit (left).
• Follow road markings if they indicate something other than the standard rule.

Turn Signal Usage

• No signal when entering the roundabout.
• Right signal when approaching the exit you intend to take.
• Signaling right already at entry indicates that you will take the first exit.

Yielding in Roundabouts

Traffic inside the circle has right of way. Slow down when entering and look for an opening. The rules are the same as for regular intersections with yield signs. See yield and intersections for a detailed explanation.

Common Mistakes on the Theory Test

• Thinking you need to signal left when entering.
• Forgetting to check the blind spot when changing lanes inside the roundabout.
• Driving in the wrong lane and having to change lanes inside the circle.

Watch out for cyclists and pedestrians at the exits. They may have yield or right of way depending on the situation.
