Driving in strong wind
This is how you handle crosswinds, gusts, and instability for safe driving in strong wind.
Strong wind affects driving stability and can move the car sideways without warning. Crosswind is especially dangerous on open stretches, bridges, and when passing large vehicles.
Where is the risk greatest?
| Situation | Risk | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Open plains and mountain passes | Steady strong crosswind | Reduce speed, hold the steering wheel firmly |
| Bridges and viaducts | Strong gusts | Significantly reduce speed |
| Tunnel entrance | Sudden gust out of tunnel | Be prepared |
| Passing a truck | First suction, then gust | Keep distance, hold the steering wheel firmly |
| After lee-zone (forest, building) | Sudden exposure | Reduce speed before the lee-zone ends |
Driving technique in strong wind
- Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel with both hands.
- Reduce speed to give yourself more time to correct.
- Tall vehicles such as vans and cars with trailers are especially vulnerable.
- Be prepared for the wind to change direction with terrain changes.
Wind warnings and signs
Wind socks along the road show wind direction and strength. Warning signs for crosswind indicate exposed stretches. Read more about warning signs in warning signs and warning triangle .
During strong storms, roads can be closed, especially mountain passes. Follow warnings and check road reports.
Wind and other challenges
Strong wind combined with rain or snow makes conditions extra demanding because both visibility and road grip are reduced. Adjust your speed according to the overall risk situation as described in speed and weather conditions .
