Driving on slippery roads

Slippery conditions are one of the biggest dangers in Norwegian traffic. Braking distance can become five to ten times longer on ice compared to dry asphalt, and you must adjust your driving style accordingly.

Techniques for slippery conditions

• Gentle use of gas, brakes, and steering is key. Sudden movements trigger skidding.
• Brake with pulsing pressure if the car lacks ABS, or press hard if it has ABS.
• Accelerate gently uphill to avoid wheel spin.
• Keep an extra-long distance to the car in front.

Warning signs on slippery roads

• Shiny asphalt surface may indicate supercooled rain or ice formation.
• Temperature around zero is particularly dangerous; the road can alternate between bare and slippery.
• Bridges and overpasses freeze before the rest of the road.
• Shaded areas in forests and along mountainsides retain ice longer.

Tire choice and equipment

Proper tires are crucial. From November 1st to the first Monday after Easter Monday, winter tires are required in winter conditions. Read more in tire types and tire requirements .

• Studded tires provide the best grip on shiny ice.
• Non-studded winter tires work well on snow and slush.
• Check tread depth regularly; a minimum of 3 mm is recommended in winter.

Skidding and correction

If the car starts to skid, steer gently in the direction the rear end is sliding and release the gas. Avoid braking hard during a skid.
