Engine brake and braking conditions
This is how to use engine braking effectively and adapt braking to different conditions.
Engine braking is an important technique that saves the brakes and provides better control, especially on downhills and slippery surfaces. This is a topic that comes up regularly on the theory test.
What is engine brake
When you release the accelerator pedal without pressing the clutch, the engine slows the car down. The lower gear you are in, the stronger the engine braking effect. In an electric car , similar braking occurs through regenerative braking.
When to use engine brake
- Downhills: Shifts down to lower gears to keep speed down without overloading the brakes
- Slippery conditions: Engine brake provides smoother and more controlled braking than the foot brake
- Intersection approach: Start braking early with engine braking
- Speed adjustment in traffic: Easier speed adjustment without constant brake applications
Brake conditions and friction
The braking effect depends on the friction between the tire and the road surface:

These values directly affect the stop distance .
Brake fade
During prolonged braking on downhill slopes, the brakes may overheat. This is called brake fade and causes the brakes to lose power. Symptoms are:
- The brake pedal feels soft and has a long travel
- The car brakes poorly despite strong pedal thrust
- You can smell smell of overheated brakes
The solution is to use engine brake in low gear so that the brake system is not overloaded.
Interaction with ABS and ESC
Modern cars have ABS and ESC that help with braking. ABS prevents wheel locking, but does not stop the car faster. The combination of engine brake and foot brake provides best control in most situations.
