Parking rules and restrictions

Parking means stopping the car and leaving it, or letting it stand for more than two minutes. The rules are strict, and violations quickly result in a fine. Also read about stopping and no-stopping zones to understand the difference.

Distance requirements for parking

You cannot park closer than the specified distance to the following:

General parking prohibitions

You cannot park:

• On the pavement, pedestrian or bicycle path
• At a road junction or too close to the junction
• On a bridge, in a tunnel, or in an underpass
• In front of driveways
• Where it would block emergency vehicles
• In bus lanes

Parking on the right and left side

The main rule is to park on the right side in the direction of travel. In one-way streets, you can park on both sides. You should park parallel to the road and as close to the curb as possible.

Signs and zone parking

No-parking signs and parking and stop signs often regulate restrictions with supplementary signs for time, duration, and fee. Zone parking in cities often requires a parking permit or payment.

Parking on slopes and hills

• Turn your wheels toward the curb so the car does not roll into the road
• Use the parking brake and engage a gear (1st gear uphill, reverse downhill)

Consequences of incorrect parking

Incorrect parking can result in:

• Parking fines from 900 NOK and up
• Towing at the owner’s expense
• Insurance liability if the car causes damage
