How the penalty point system works

In Norway, certain traffic offenses are recorded with points on your driver’s license. The system is intended to prevent repeated violations. The points remain for three years from the date of the offense.

Number of points per offense

Consequences of too many points

• 8 points within three years leads to loss of driving privileges for six months
• During the probation period (the first two years), the limit is only 4 points before revocation
• After revocation during the probation period, a new theory test and practical driving test is required

Additional penalties beyond points

Serious violations can result in sanctions beyond points:

• Simplified fine (penalty) for minor offenses
• Criminal report for serious violations
• Suspended or unconditional imprisonment for driving under the influence or serious speeding
• Confiscation of driver’s license on the spot for serious violations

Avoid points

• Respect speed limit signs and follow speed limits
• Pay attention to prohibitory signs and right-of-way rules
• Always use a seatbelt
• Never drive in a state of intoxication
