Registration and vehicle registration certificate

All motor vehicles used on public roads in Norway must be registered with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The vehicle registration certificate is the most important document that confirms the car is legally registered.

The registration certificate consists of two parts:

You must always be able to show part 1 of the vehicle registration certificate during inspections. Missing registration certificates may result in a fine.

Information in the Registration Certificate

The registration certificate contains, among other things:

• Registration number (license plate)
• Owner’s name and address
• Vehicle make, model, and year of manufacture
• Total weight and payload
• Number of seats
• Date for next EU inspection

License Plates

License plates must be intact, clean, and easily readable. Norway uses white plates with black letters and numbers. Special plates exist for test drives, diplomats, and vintage cars.

Other Documents You Should Bring

• Driver’s license with the correct category
• Insurance certificate or receipt showing valid liability insurance
• Part 1 of the vehicle registration certificate

Re-registration at Ownership Change

When buying or selling a car, the vehicle must be re-registered within the deadline. Both the buyer and seller are responsible for ensuring this happens. Re-registration is done digitally or at a traffic station.

Deregistration and Plate Surrender

If the car will no longer be used on the road, you can return the license plates and deregister the vehicle. A deregistered car should not be used in traffic and does not need insurance as long as it is not on a public road.
