Securing the accident site
- Turn on hazard lights and place warning triangle at least 100 meters behind the accident
- Wear a reflective vest before leaving the car
- On a motorway: park behind the guardrail and never walk in the lane unnecessarily
- Ensure that other road users see the accident site in time
Life-saving first aid -
- ABCDE
| Letter | Meaning | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| A | Airway | Tilt the head backward, lift the chin |
| B | Breathing | Look, listen, feel for 10 seconds |
| C | Circulation | Stop major bleeding with pressure |
| D | Disability (Consciousness) | Speak to the person, check response |
| E | Exposure | Keep the person warm, look for injuries |
Recovery position
Use recovery position when the person is unconscious but breathing:
- Ensure open airways by tilting the head backwards
- Lay the person on their side so vomit drains out
- Cover with a jacket or blanket to avoid cooling
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
When the person is not breathing normally, start CPR :
- 30 chest compressions – deep and fast, in the center of the chest
- 2 rescue breaths – tilt the head back, lift the chin, blow for 1 second
- Continue 30:2 until the ambulance takes over or the person starts breathing
- Use defibrillator (AED) if available – it gives you instructions
Bleeding and shock
- Major bleeding – apply direct pressure with a bandage or cloth
- Shock – raise legs, keep the person warm, speak reassuringly
- Internal injuries – do not move the person unnecessarily, wait for the ambulance
Call 113
When you call the emergency number, have ready:
- What has happened
- Where the accident is (street name, kilometer marker, landmarks)
- How many are injured
- What kind of injuries you can see
- Your phone number – do not hang up until the operator says it is okay
