Sun glare and backlight

Glare from the sun is an underestimated traffic hazard. A low sun, especially at sunrise and sunset, can make it almost impossible to see the road, pedestrians, and traffic lights.

When is the risk greatest?

Preventive measures

• Use a sun visor in the car and adjust it as needed.
• Keep sunglasses available, preferably with polarized lenses that reduce reflections.
• Keep the windshield clean inside and out. A dirty windshield disperses light and worsens glare.
• Reduce speed when you cannot see clearly.
• Increase the distance to the car in front, as you may have difficulty seeing braking in time.

What to do when you are dazzled?

1. Slow down immediately.
2. Look towards the right edge of the road or lane line to maintain direction.
3. Avoid looking directly into the sun.
4. Be especially mindful of pedestrians and cyclists, who become difficult to see in backlight.
5. Use low beams so that others can see you.

Glare from other vehicles

Glare also occurs when oncoming vehicles have high beams or incorrectly adjusted headlights.

• Move your gaze towards the right edge of the road until the vehicle has passed.
• Flash your high beams to warn the other driver.
• Never look back with high beams out of revenge. It increases risk for both.

Reflections and mirror glare

• Interior mirrors should be tilted to the anti-glare position at night.
• Wet asphalt and shiny surfaces enhance glare from both the sun and car lights.
• Keep an extra eye on speed choices when conditions create reflections.
