Norwegian police and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration regularly carry out traffic checks to ensure road safety. Here is what you need to know.

Types of traffic checks

Sobriety check

• The police can stop you for a routine check without suspicion.
• You are obliged to blow into a breathalyzer if the police ask.
• Refusing the breath test is treated as if you are over the alcohol limit.
• If there is suspicion of drug influence, the police can require a blood test.

Automatic speed check

• Speed cameras register your speed at a specific point.
• Section average speed checks measure the average speed between two points over a longer distance.
• You are notified with signs that there are automatic traffic checks on the route.
• Fines are normally issued to the registered owner if the driver cannot be identified.

Technical inspection on the road

• The Norwegian Public Roads Administration can stop vehicles for an on-site inspection.
• They check, among other things, tires, brakes, lights, and vehicle weight.
• Deficiencies can lead to a ban on use and fees.
• Vehicles with serious deficiencies can be deregistered on the spot.

Your rights during a check

• You have the right to be informed of the reason for the check.
• You have the right to appeal any fines.
• You can request that the speed measurement be verified with calibrated equipment.
• You have the right to be treated correctly and objectively.
