Hydroplaning and aquaplaning
Understand the causes of hydroplaning and learn the techniques that help you maintain control on wet roads.
Hydroplaning (aquaplaning) occurs when the tires cannot push away the water on the road, and the car slides uncontrollably on a water film. The phenomenon can happen even at moderate speeds if conditions are unfavorable.
Causes of hydroplaning

| High speed | The higher the speed, the less time the tire has to channel away water |
| Worn tires | Low tread depth reduces the capacity of the water channels |
| A lot of water on the road | Heavy rain, puddles, and ruts collect water |
| Narrow tires | Concentrate pressure, but provide a smaller contact area |
| Low tire pressure | The tire flattens out and loses the ability to cut through water |
The risk increases especially over 80 km/h and with a tread depth under 3 mm.
How to prevent hydroplaning
- Reduce speed in rain and on wet roads, especially where water accumulates.
- Keep the tires in good condition with sufficient tread depth.
- Avoid ruts in the road where water collects most.
- Check tire pressure regularly.
- Increase the distance to the car in front according to adjusted speed and hidden hazards .
What to do when the car starts to hydroplane
- Release the accelerator gently without braking abruptly.
- Keep the steering wheel straight ahead and avoid sudden steering movements.
- Wait until the tires regain grip before steering or braking.
- If the car begins to skid , steer gently in the direction of the skid.
Hard braking during hydroplaning can cause the car to spin even with ABS, because the tires lack contact with the asphalt.
Speed and hydroplaning
