Bus Stop Rules
When driving a bus, you must handle bus stops efficiently and safely.
- Stop close to the curb so passengers do not have to step into the roadway.
- Do not leave the bus stop until the doors are closed and passengers are safe.
- Check mirrors and blind spots before driving out.
Right of Way for Buses
In Norway, special right-of-way rules apply for buses leaving a bus stop.

| Bus stop in a 60 km/h zone or lower | Other road users must give way to the bus |
| Bus stop in a zone over 60 km/h | The bus does not have special rights |
| Bus bay | The bus must yield to other traffic when exiting |
| Bus lane | The bus can use its own lane |
Even if others should give way, as a bus driver you must ensure it is safe to drive out. Use your indicators in good time.
Bus Lanes and Dedicated RoutesBus lanes are reserved for buses, taxis, and in some cases motorcycles and electric cars. Cyclists are also allowed to use bus lanes, so keep a safe distance.
Some cities have dedicated bus routes with physically separated driving areas, where you must follow separate traffic light signals.
The bus’s size in traffic
- The bus’s length requires good predictability and early planning of maneuvers.
- Consider the rear overhang of the bus, which swings in the opposite direction of steering.
- Check the tracking curve in tight turns and narrow streets.
- Be aware of height restrictions at underpasses, bridges, and tunnel openings.
Interaction with vulnerable road users
- Pay extra attention to pedestrians at stops and crosswalks.
- Children may suddenly cross the road in front of or behind the bus.
- Cyclists in bus lanes have the right to be there, and you are obliged to be considerate.
