Bus and school transport
Special rules and considerations that apply to bus driving in connection with school transport.
School Transport in Norway
School transport is a right for students who live far from school. The municipality and county organize the transportation, and the bus driver has a special responsibility for the children’s safety.
Rules at Schools and Bus Stops
- At school bus stops you must always come to a complete stop and let off all children before driving on.
- Use the warning lights (school sign) on the bus during boarding and alighting.
- Do not drive away from the bus stop until all children have gotten safely away from the roadway.
- Be prepared that children may cross the road right in front of or behind the bus.
Special Requirements for School Buses| Requirement | Description |
| — | — | | Signage | The bus must have signs indicating it is used for school transport | | Seatbelts | All passengers must wear seatbelts where installed | | Standing passengers | Not allowed on school trips over 60 km/h | | Supervision | The driver is responsible for order on board |
Children’s behavior in traffic
Children behave differently in traffic than adults. They have poorer awareness, are unpredictable, and can suddenly run into the road.
- Reduce speed in 30 zones and near schools.
- Be extra vigilant during dark periods when children are harder to see.
- Wait to drive until you have visual confirmation that all children are safe.
Driver’s responsibility
- Ensure that children sit safely and use a seatbelt.
- Report unwanted incidents to the transport company.
- Know the routes and be aware of particularly hard-to-see stops.
- Adjust your driving style so that passengers do not fall or injure themselves.
