Driving in the city with a bus
How to handle city traffic as a bus driver, focusing on bus stops, vulnerable road users, and narrow streets.
Challenges in City Traffic
City driving with a bus requires constant attention. Heavy traffic, many bus stops, and vulnerable road users mean that speed must be adjusted and reaction time is short.
Bus Stops in the City
- Always stop close to the curb to make boarding and alighting safe.
- Ensure that passengers have left the bus before closing the doors.
- Use mirrors and cameras to check blind spots before pulling out.
- In zones with a speed limit of 60 km/h or lower, other road users must give the bus space when leaving the bus stop.
Pedestrians and Crosswalks
- Reduce speed at crosswalks and be prepared for pedestrians crossing.
- Stop for pedestrians waiting at the crosswalk, not just those already on the road.
- Be extra attentive at bus stops where passengers may cross directly in front of the bus.
Cyclists
Cyclists are allowed to use bus lanes, and you often share the road with them.
| Situation | Measure |
|---|---|
| Overtaking a cyclist | Keep at least 1.5 meters distance |
| Cyclist in bus lane | Adjust speed, do not force past |
| Intersections and turns | Check blind spot for cyclists |
| Bus stop without lay-by | Watch out for cyclists passing on the left side |
Narrow streets and turns
- The bus’s length and overhang make turns in narrow streets challenging.
- The rear wheels cut inwards, while the rear overhang turns outwards.
- Plan turns in good time and use the entire turning radius.
- Be aware of parked cars, trucks, and other obstacles.
Low-emission zones
Several Norwegian cities have low-emission zones and zero-emission zones with specific rules. Check that the bus meets the requirements for the zone you are driving in.
