The Class Labeling System

EASA has introduced a class labeling system from C0 to C4 that applies to drones sold in the EU/EOS-markedet.. The class labeling shows which subcategory (A1, A2, or A3) the drone can be used in.

Drones without class labeling can still be used in the open category, but with restrictions.

Overview of the Classes

Requirements per Class

C0 (under 250 g)C0 drones have the fewest restrictions. They can be flown in subcategory A1 without training requirements, unless the drone has a camera. C0 drones under 250 grams without a camera are exempt from registration obligation.

C1 (under 900 g)

C1 drones can fly over people in A1, but not over crowds. They must have remote identification that sends the operator’s registration number. The pilot must pass a web-based theory test.

C2 (under 4 kg)

C2 drones can be used in A2 with at least 30 meters distance from people. With activated low-speed mode, the minimum distance is reduced to 5 meters. The pilot needs a remote pilot certificate (A2 certificate).

C3 and C4 (under 25 kg)Both classes are used in A3 with at least 150 meters distance from residential and commercial areas. The difference is that C3 requires remote identification and geo-awareness, while C4 is intended for homemade drones without such systems.

Drones without class marking

Drones purchased before January 1, 2024 without C-marking can still be used in the open category under transitional rules.
