Types of hunting

Stalking

Stalking is the most demanding form of hunting and involves the hunter moving quietly through the terrain to get within shooting range of the game. This form is especially used for deer and wild reindeer. Important factors:

• Stay downwind so that the wind blows from the game towards you
• Move slowly and avoid sudden movements
• Use the terrain’s cover to get close
• Use binoculars frequently to spot game at a distance

Drive Hunting

During drive hunting, a group of hunters and possibly dogs drive the game towards stationed shooters. All participants must wear high-visibility clothing, and no one should leave their post without instructions from the hunt leader.

Stand Hunting

Stand hunting (also called posting or ambush hunting) involves the hunter sitting quietly at a strategic point and waiting for the game to pass by. This method is common for deer, especially at well-known crossing points where the game passes regularly.

A hunting tower provides a good overview and safer shooting angles. The seating position should be chosen with regard to wind direction and a safe shooting background.

Bait HuntingBait hunting involves the hunter luring the game to them using bait or attractants. This method is used, among others, for red foxes. Bait hunting requires patience and good camouflage. The use of live decoys is prohibited in Norway.

Bird Hunting

Hunting forest birds and grouse often takes place with a pointing dog that finds and points to the bird until the hunter is in position. Hunting ducks and geese often takes place from a hide by a lake or in farmland.

Trapping

Trapping with approved traps is a legal form of hunting for certain species such as red fox, marten, and mink. The traps must be type-approved and checked at least every 48 hours (preferably daily). Using traps that are not approved can result in punishment.
