The shooting test for big game hunting

What is the shooting test?

The shooting test is an annual mandatory test for everyone who wants to hunt big game (moose, deer, roe deer, wild reindeer). The test documents that the hunter can shoot with sufficient accuracy to humanely kill the game. You must pass the shooting test every hunting year you plan to hunt big game.

Requirements and execution

The shooting test can be taken at approved shooting ranges from February 1 until the last day of the hunting season for the relevant species.

Shooting positions

During the shooting test, you can choose your own shooting position, but you must use a rest:- Prone with a firm rest — most stable position

• Sitting with rest on knee or stick
• Standing with rest against tree or shooting stick

On a hunt, you should always use a rest to achieve the best possible accuracy. Practice the position you use most during hunting.

Tips for Passing

• Zeroing — check that the scope is correctly set at 100 meters
• Breathing — take a deep breath, exhale halfway, hold your breath, and squeeze the trigger
• Trigger — apply steady pressure on the trigger, do not jerk
• Practice regularly — shoot regularly at the range throughout the year
• Know your weapon — use the same weapon you hunt with

After Passing the Test

Once you have passed, the test is registered in the Hunter Register and is valid for the current hunting year. You must carry proof of a passed shooting test while hunting, either digitally via the Hunter Register or as a printout.

Shotgun Shooting Course

For hunting small game with a shotgun, there is no mandatory shooting test, but many associations offer shotgun shooting courses to improve accuracy. Clay and skeet ranges are good places to practice.
