Basic Rules for Firearm Safety

Safe firearm handling is the most important topic on the hunter’s test and the area where most fail. The basic safety rules are:

1. Always treat the firearm as if it is loaded
2. Never point the muzzle at anything you do not want to shoot
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
4. Always be sure of your target and what is behind it

Handling in the Field

During hunting, the firearm should only be loaded when you are in hunting position and ready to shoot. When moving through terrain, carry the firearm with the muzzle pointing up or down. When passing obstacles such as fences and ditches, the firearm must always be unloaded and secured first.

Gun safes must be made of steel and approved according to current standards. The safe must be bolted down to the wall or floor so that it cannot be removed.

Transport of weapons

During transport, the weapon must be unloaded and packed in a case or suitcase. The bolt or breech should preferably be kept separately from the weapon during transport. In a car, the weapon should be hidden, preferably in the trunk.

Acquisition of weapons

To buy hunting firearms, you need a firearms license issued by the police. You must have passed the hunter’s exam and be able to document the need. For a rifle, registration in the Hunter Register and payment of the hunter fee are required.
