Game Species

In Norway, there are around 60 huntable species divided into big game, small game, and seabirds. The Norwegian Environment Agency determines which species are huntable, and hunting seasons are revised periodically.

Hunting Seasons for Big Game

Big game hunting requires, in addition to passing the hunter’s exam, an annual shooting test and an allocated quota from the municipality or the reindeer management board.

Hunting seasons vary somewhat between counties and municipalities. Always check local regulations before planning a hunt.

The Principle of Protection

All wildlife in Norway is basically protected. Hunting is only allowed in the periods and for the species specifically opened for hunting. Outside the hunting seasons, hunting is prohibited, and violations can lead to fines and loss of hunting rights.

Hunting Ethics

Good hunting ethics involve respect for nature and wildlife. A responsible hunter:- Only shoots when certain of species and sex

• Avoids shots that carry a risk of injuring the animal
• Always performs a thorough tracking after a hit
• Takes care of the meat and fully utilizes the game
• Respects the landowner’s rights
