Important Weight Concepts

To drive a truck legally, you must know the basic weight concepts listed in the vehicle registration document.

Weight Limits in Norway

The weight limits depend on number of axles, axle spacing, and road class. On some road sections, lower limits are indicated by signs.

Axle Load and Distribution

• Single axle normally has a maximum axle load of 10,000 kg.
• Bogies/dual axles have limits that vary according to axle spacing and suspension system.
• Incorrect distribution of the load results in poorer steering, longer braking distance, and increased wear on tires and suspensions.

Place heavy loads low and centered on the loading platform for the best possible weight distribution between axles.

Consequences of overload

Overload is both dangerous and costly:

• Fees are calculated based on the percentage exceeding the allowed weight.
• In cases of severe overload, the vehicle may be given a driving ban until the weight is corrected.
• Overload increases the risk of tire blowouts, brake failure, and damage to the road surface.
• The driver may receive points on their license and in the worst case lose their driving privileges.

How to calculate payload1. Find the permitted total weight in the vehicle registration certificate.

2. Subtract the tare weight including fixed equipment and fuel.
3. The result is the available payload.

Remember that extra equipment such as a crane, tail lift, or tarpaulin rack reduces the payload.
