Position on the road

As a moped rider, you should keep as far to the right as possible on the road. This gives room for faster traffic that wants to pass you. However, you should not drive so far to the right that you end up in the ditch or on unstable ground.

On multi-lane roads, you stay in the right lane. Mopeds are not allowed to drive on motorways or expressways.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts can seem challenging on a moped. Follow these rules:

• You have to yield when entering the roundabout
• Stay in the outer lane throughout the roundabout
• Use the right turn signal when exiting the roundabout
• Be extra aware of vehicles that may change lanes inside the roundabout

Because the moped is small and hard to see, you should make yourself visible with eye contact and clear positioning.

Overtaking

A moped can pass parked cars and slower vehicles on the left, as long as it is clear and safe. Use your indicator and check the mirror and blind spot before merging.

You must never overtake at pedestrian crossings, in blind curves, or just before hilltops.

Interaction with other road users

Pay special attention to trucks and buses that have large blind spots. Keep your distance and make sure the driver can see you in the mirror. Avoid positioning yourself directly beside large vehicles at intersections.
