Moped classes AM146 and AM147

Two moped classes

In Norway, mopeds are divided into two classes under driving license class AM. AM146 covers what most people know as a regular moped, while AM147 is the lighter variant, also called cycle path moped.

Technical differences

AM146 is a fully-fledged moped driven in regular traffic on the road. AM147 is designed for lower speed and can be driven on pedestrian and cycle paths where this is signed.

Driving license and age requirements

Both classes require a class AM driving license and a minimum age of 16 years. You must complete the traffic basic course , moped course, and pass the theory test at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Read more about class AM moped license for details about the training.

Where can you drive?

A class AM146 moped follows the same rules as other vehicles on the road but is not allowed to drive on motorways or expressways. You should keep to the right and not obstruct traffic unnecessarily.

A class AM147 bicycle path moped can also use pedestrian and bicycle paths, but must then adjust speed to other vulnerable road users. On regular roads, the same rules as for AM146 apply.

Choice of class

Which class is most suitable depends on the area of use. If you are commuting along busy roads, AM146 is the most practical. If you need transport in quieter areas with pedestrian and bicycle paths, AM147 can be a good alternative.
