Helmet Requirement
The use of a approved helmet is mandatory for everyone who drives or rides on a moped in Norway. The helmet requirement applies regardless of speed and distance. If you drive without a helmet, you risk a fine and may lose the right to drive.
CE Marking
An approved helmet must have a CE marking with reference to the standard ECE 22.05 or newer ECE 22.06. The marking is located on a label inside the helmet or on the strap. Helmets without CE marking are not approved for use on mopeds in Norway.

Proper Fit
A helmet that does not fit properly provides poor protection. Here’s how to check the fit:- The helmet should fit snugly without pinching or causing a headache
- It should not tip forward or backward when you shake your head
- The strap should be tightened under the chin with room for a finger between the strap and the chin
- Try the helmet for at least five minutes in the store before you buy
Helmet Types
A full-face helmet provides the best protection because it covers the entire head including the face and jaw. An open helmet (jet helmet) protects the head and sides but leaves the face exposed. For moped riding, a full-face helmet or a helmet with a flip-down visor is recommended for the best possible safety.
Visor and Eye Protection
The visor protects the eyes from wind, insects, and debris. Keep the visor clean and scratch-free for good visibility. A scratched visor can cause glare in bright light. In the dark, you should use a clear visor rather than a tinted one.
When should the helmet be replaced?Replace the helmet if it has been subjected to a strong impact, even if it looks undamaged. The inner material may have cracked without visible damage. Manufacturers recommend replacing the helmet every five years regardless of use, because the material ages.
