Can you bring a passenger?

You can only bring a passenger on the moped if it is type approved for two people. Information about this can be found in the vehicle registration document. A moped that is approved for only one person is not allowed to carry a passenger under any circumstances.

Requirements for the passenger

Helmet requirement

Both the driver and the passenger are required to wear a helmet on a moped. The helmet must be CE-marked and fit correctly without tilting or slipping. Effect on driving characteristics

A passenger noticeably changes the moped’s driving characteristics:

• Braking distance increases because the total weight is higher
• Acceleration becomes slower
• Balance is affected, especially in turns and at low speed
• Steering can feel heavier

Adjust your driving style by keeping a lower speed, braking earlier, and taking turns more gently than usual.

Passenger behavior

The passenger should sit calmly and follow the rider’s movements in turns. Sudden movements can make the moped unstable. The passenger should hold onto the rider’s waist or the handle at the back of the seat.

Load in addition to a passenger

With a passenger on board, you have limited space for cargo. Avoid hanging heavy bags on the handlebars, as this negatively affects the steering. Instead, use a luggage rack or a backpack for the passenger.Test your knowledge with the free theory test and check that you know the rules for passengers.
