Why Maintenance is Important

A well-maintained moped is safer to ride and lasts longer. Poor maintenance can lead to mechanical failure on the road and make the moped illegal to ride on public roads.

Oil and Engine

Engine oil lubricates moving parts and prevents wear. In a two-stroke engine, the oil is mixed with gasoline, while a four-stroke engine has a separate oil reservoir.

BrakesBrakes are the most important safety equipment on the moped. Regularly check that both brakes are functioning properly. Worn brake pads result in longer stopping distances and must be replaced in time. Brake cables should be adjusted so that the brake grips well without slipping.

Chain and drivetrain

The chain transfers power from the engine to the rear wheel. A loose or dry chain gives poor performance and can break while riding. Keep the chain lubricated and regularly check tension. The chain should have a little slack, but not so much that it can jump off the sprocket.

Lights and electrical

All lights must function at all times. Check the running lights, rear lights, brake lights, and turn signals before riding. Faulty lights make you invisible to other road users and can result in a fine if checked by authorities.

TiresTire pressure affects both driving characteristics and braking distance. Check the pressure regularly and keep it within the manufacturer’s recommendations. Worn tires with too little tread depth provide poor grip, especially on wet surfaces.
