What is class S?

Driver’s license class S gives the right to drive a tracked motorcycle, that is, a snowmobile. The class was introduced to ensure that everyone who drives a snowmobile has sufficient knowledge of traffic rules, safety, and environmental considerations.

Age requirement

You must be 16 years old to take a class S driver’s license. Training can start somewhat earlier, but the theory test and practical test can earliest be taken from the age of 16.

Mandatory training

Training for class S consists of:

• Traffic basic course if you have not done it before
• Theory course focusing on snowmobile rules, nature, and safety
• Practical driving with an approved instructor in varied terrain
• Theory test at the Norwegian Public Roads AdministrationThe practical training emphasizes driving technique in snow, handling steep terrain, and safe driving on trails.

What does class S cover?

A class S driving license allows you to drive:

• Tracked motorcycle (snowmobile) on marked trails and with a permit in wilderness areas
• Snowmobile with a trailer

Class S does not give the right to drive other motorized vehicles on the road.

Alternative with class T

If you already have a class T driving license and are 18 years old, you automatically have the right to drive a snowmobile. Class S is therefore most relevant for those between 16 and 18 years old who want to drive a snowmobile without first taking class T.
