Requirements for Taxi Meters

All taxis in Norway must have an approved and sealed taxi meter. The taxi meter shall register and calculate the price for each ride based on time and distance.

The taxi meter must be type approved by the Norwegian Metrology Service and installed by an authorized workshop. It is illegal to manipulate or bypass the taxi meter.

Pricing Structure

The price in a taxi is calculated based on three main elements:

In addition, there may be surcharges for bookings, evening rides, weekend driving, and extra passengers. All surcharges must be stated in the price list which is visible in the car.

Price Information

The taxi driver is obliged to inform the passenger of the estimated price for the ride before it starts. For advance bookings, the price must be provided upon request.

• The Maximum Price Regulation sets a ceiling on what taxis can charge.
• The driver cannot demand more than what the taximeter shows.
• The price must be predictable and in line with the published fares.

Receipt Requirements

After each ride, the driver must offer the passenger a receipt without the passenger asking for it.

The receipt is generated automatically by the taximeter. Missing receipt can lead to sanctions during inspections.

Inspection and SealingThe Norwegian Metrology Service carries out regular inspections of taxi meters.

• The taxi meter must be sealed so that it cannot be altered without breaking the seal.
• During service or repair, the taxi meter must be calibrated and resealed.
• Breaking the seal is punishable and can lead to revocation of the license.
• The taxi driver is obligated to report any faults with the taxi meter immediately.
