With a Class T driving license, you can drive a tractor with a trailer. There are specific limitations for weight and dimensions.

Always check the vehicle registration certificate for the tractor’s allowed trailer weight and total weight before loading.

Equipment on Public Roads

Motorized equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, and other work machines can be driven on public roads with Class T. When transporting equipment mounted on the tractor, separate rules apply:- The equipment must be securely fastened and protected against coming loose.

• Protruding parts must be marked with flags or reflectors.
• A width exceeding 2.55 m usually requires an escort vehicle or a special permit.
• The equipment must not cover lights and reflectors on the tractor.

Securing the load

All cargo on a trailer must be secured so that it cannot shift during transport.

• Straps or chains for heavy items.
• Cones or boards for loose cargo like gravel or sand.
• Covering when the load can blow away.

Poorly secured loads are a common cause of accidents and can result in fines if inspected.

Coupling and brakes

• The trailer must have an approved trailer hitch that fits the tractor’s coupling.
• Trailers over a certain weight must have their own brakes.
• You are required to check that the brakes work before you drive.
• A safety chain or cable must prevent the trailer from completely detaching in case of a coupling failure.

Marking and visibility

• The trailer must have its own reflectors and rear lights.
• Width beyond the tractor’s width requires extra side marker lights.
• Long loads that extend beyond the back of the trailer must be marked with a red flag or reflector.
