Light requirements for tractors

Proper lighting is crucial for safety when driving in the dark. Tractors often have poorer lights than passenger cars and are difficult for other road users to notice.

High beam and low beam

Use high beam on dark roads without street lighting to see further ahead. Switch to low beam well in advance when you meet other vehicles or drive behind others so that you do not dazzle them. Work lights on the tractor must be turned off when driving on the road, as they can dazzle oncoming traffic.

Trailer and implements in the dark

Trailers and equipment that cover the tractor’s lights must have their own lights and reflectors:

• Tail lights and brake lights on the trailer
• Side marker lights on vehicles and trailers over 6 meters
• Reflectors on the sides and rear
• Protruding parts marked with white reflector in front and red reflector at the back

Check that all lights on the trailer work before driving out in the dark. A defective light connector is a common source of error.

Slow-moving vehicle sign

The slow-moving vehicle sign (red-orange triangle) is especially important in the dark. It has a retroreflective surface that reflects light from other cars’ headlights. Keep the sign clean for optimal effect.

Reflective vest and personal visibility

If you need to get out of the tractor along the road in the dark, you should wear a reflective vest. The tractor and trailer can be difficult for passing cars to see, and you risk being hit as a pedestrian.## Cleaning of lights and reflectors

Mud and dust quickly cover lights and reflectors during agricultural driving. Stop and clean the lights regularly while driving, especially after working in the field. Covered lights drastically reduce visibility.
