Learn about the most important safety measures when driving a tractor, from rollover prevention to power take-off and passengers.
Rollover is the Biggest Danger
Rollover accidents are the most common cause of death in tractor driving in Norway. A tractor has a high center of gravity and can tip both sideways and backward if the driver is not careful.

Rollover Protective Structure and Seatbelt
Modern tractors have a rollover protective structure (ROPS) that protects the driver in case of a rollover. The rollover protective structure is only effective if you use a seatbelt. Without a seatbelt, you can be thrown out of the cabin and crushed under the tractor.
Never remove the rollover protective structure even if it gets in the way of a low ceiling or branches. It can save your life.## Power Take-Off (PTO)
The power take-off drives attached implements and rotates with great force. Accidents involving the power take-off often result in very serious injuries.
- Always turn off the power take-off before leaving the driver’s seat
- Use a protective cover over the driveshaft between the tractor and implement
- Never go near rotating parts with loose clothing
- Make sure that no one is nearby before starting the power take-off
Passengers
As a general rule, it is not allowed to have passengers on the tractor, unless the cab has an approved passenger seat with a seatbelt. Children should never sit on the driver’s lap or stand in the cab while driving.
Mounting and dismounting
Always use three points of contact (two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand) when mounting and dismounting. Many injuries occur when the driver slips or falls from the step.Test your knowledge of tractor safety with a free theory test .
