Speed Limits for Tractors

Tractors have a lower design speed than other vehicles. You are required to drive in accordance with what the tractor is designed and approved for.

Even if the road’s speed limit is higher, you should never drive faster than what the tractor is designed and registered for.

Lighting and Warning

A tractor on public roads must have:- Driving lights at the front and rear that are on during all driving

• Flashing warning lights (rotating yellow light) when the tractor is obstructing traffic
• Reflectors at the rear and on the sides
• Turn signals that function correctly
• Slow-moving vehicle sign (red-orange triangle) at the back of vehicles that cannot maintain 40 km/h

When driving in darkness, it is especially important that all lighting works. Wide equipment or trailers must have extra marking with reflectors.

Position on the road

You must keep as far to the right as possible to allow faster traffic to pass. Use turnouts or wider sections to let queues build up behind you pass. Obstructing traffic unnecessarily can result in a fine.

Right of way and intersections

Tractors follow the same right-of-way rules as other vehicles. Remember that a tractor has a longer braking distance and poorer visibility than a passenger car. Plan intersections and turns well in advance.

Be especially mindful of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. The size of the tractor creates larger blind spots than you are used to from a car.

Visibility Requirements

• Keep windows and mirrors clean to ensure good visibility.
• Remove snow, ice, and dirt from lights and reflectors before departure.
• Use the mirrors actively and make shoulder checks whenever possible.
